Navigating reality in an age of synthetic truth.

For thousands of years, the human legal and social system relied on a simple biological fact: if you saw it with your own eyes, it happened. “Seeing is believing” was the gold standard of truth.

That standard has officially expired.

With the rise of generative AI, deepfakes, and hyper-realistic voice synthesis, we have entered a period of history where our eyes and ears can be deceived effortlessly. We can now watch videos of events that never occurred and listen to speeches that were never spoken.

The danger here is not just “fake news.” The danger is the collapse of shared reality.

If a video acts as proof of nothing, then truth becomes subjective. When we can no longer trust the evidence of our senses, we retreat into tribalism. We only believe the videos that confirm our existing biases and dismiss everything else as “AI-generated” or “fake.”

This part of the “Final Human Update” is perhaps the most disorienting. We are being asked to navigate a physical world with biological senses that are no longer adequate for detecting digital lies. We must develop a new instinct—a mental watermark—to distinguish the synthetic from the real. Until then, skepticism is our only shield.
