After years of letting Android devices dominate the foldable space, Apple has finally entered the fray. The long-awaited iPhone Duo is officially here, marking the biggest shift in the company’s smartphone lineup since the original iPhone. Priced at a premium $1,999, this device allows users to carry a 7.6-inch tablet right in their pocket.
Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the iPhone Duo following a hands-on session at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, ahead of its official shipping date on October 23rd.
1. A Massive, Versatile Screen
The first thing you notice about the Duo is the sheer amount of screen real estate. When closed, it feels like a squatter, wider version of a standard iPhone. Apple has cleverly moved the app controls to the side of the screen rather than the top, making one-handed navigation remarkably easy.
Flipping the device open transforms it into a mini tablet, perfect for reading articles with larger text or enjoying full-screen videos. The device can be propped up into a “tent mode” to watch from the outside screen, or “laptop mode” to view the interior display. While there is a slight indent—the dreaded crease—between the two halves, it is mostly unnoticeable to the eye, even if you can still feel it physically.
One standout feature taking advantage of the dual screens is the camera interface: you can play cartoons on the outside screen to distract your kids while taking their picture from the other side.
2. A Productivity Powerhouse
For those who rely on their phones for work, the iPhone Duo acts as a “micro iPad”. It supports tablet-grade multitasking, allowing users to comfortably run two applications side-by-side. Having a Word document open on one half of the screen while browsing a webpage on the other significantly boosts mobile productivity.
However, the success of this feature hinges on third-party developers. While Apple has showcased Duo-friendly versions of Slack and Zoom, the rest of the App Store will need time to update their software to fully utilize the foldable format.
3. The Necessary Compromises
To achieve the foldable form factor, Apple had to make some notable trade-offs, making the Duo a step down from the flagship iPhone 18 Pro in a few key areas.
- Cameras: The Duo features only two main cameras and tops out at a 2x zoom, compared to the impressive 8x zoom found on the 18 Pro.
- Security: Face ID is completely absent. Instead, the device relies on Touch ID, which can be slightly awkward to authenticate depending on how you are holding the phone. A smart workaround is to register multiple fingerprints for both hands.
- Battery: Standard battery life clocks in at around 24 hours per charge, identical to the 18 Pro. If you limit your media consumption exclusively to the outside screen, that lifespan can stretch up to 37 hours.
Apple didn’t invent the foldable phone—competitors like Samsung, who actually supplies Apple’s displays, are already on iterations like the Galaxy Z Fold 8. However, Apple has invested heavily in refining the software and user interface to make this hybrid device feel seamless. The true test will come when consumers get to push the iPhone Duo to its limits in everyday, real-world scenarios.
