Transforming how artificial intelligence operates in the corporate world, Google has elevated its Gemini AI model beyond the role of a mere digital assistant, turning it into a fully autonomous “Work Agent.”

With its latest update, Gemini receives an official corporate email address and corporate identity, enabling it to function independently within an organization much like a human colleague.

New Capabilities Granted to Gemini

Previously limited to responding to user prompts, Gemini can now act as an active workplace collaborator. Under this update, the AI agent can perform several core functions:

  • Direct Email Communication: Using its own dedicated corporate email address, Gemini can send and receive emails directly with other employees across the organization.
  • Meeting Coordination: The agent can autonomously check schedules, plan meetings, and coordinate times with team members.
  • Task Delegation to Subagents: Gemini can break down complex projects into smaller tasks and delegate them to specialized subordinate AI agents (subagents) under its supervision.

Beyond Software: The “Official Employee” Role

This update represents a major shift in corporate infrastructure rather than just a routine software upgrade. Until now, AI has been treated purely as a tool or application operated by humans. By assigning Gemini an official email address and corporate identity, the AI effectively becomes a recognized member of the organization’s workforce.

Just like a human employee, this corporate identity grants the AI agent permissions to:

  1. Access internal company data and information,
  2. Make autonomous operational decisions, and
  3. Log into internal corporate systems and workflows using dedicated access permissions.

Consequently, companies will now need to establish an “onboarding” process for AI agents similar to hiring a new human staff member. Human Resources and IT departments will be tasked with defining the AI’s role, granting appropriate system credentials, and setting operational boundaries.

Long-Term Impact and Legal Challenges

While this restructuring promises new efficiencies, it also introduces a critical legal and ethical dilemma for modern businesses.

When autonomous AI agents begin sending official emails and making independent decisions, who bears the legal liability when something goes wrong? If an AI employee sends an erroneous email, leaks confidential data, or makes a flawed business decision that causes financial or reputational damage, determining accountability becomes complex. Legal experts are already questioning whether the responsibility falls on the company deploying the agent, the human manager supervising it, or the tech giant that built the underlying model.

The Next Evolution of AI Agents

Google’s move marks the next major phase in the rapid evolution of AI agents, following closely behind recent industry developments surrounding Meta’s Muse model and its integration across digital platforms.

Artificial intelligence is no longer just a passive tool completing isolated tasks in the background. By acquiring legitimate digital identities within corporate networks, AI is rapidly evolving into an active “digital workforce” operating alongside human employees.
