In a recent in-depth interview with tech journalist Joanna Stern at Meta’s Menlo Park headquarters, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg laid out an ambitious vision for the future of computing. Ranging from voice-enabled AI agents to lightweight smart glasses and holographic mixed reality, Meta is undergoing a massive transformation centered on artificial intelligence.

1. The Rise of “Muse” and AI Alignment

Meta recently launched Muse, an advanced AI agent platform designed to proactively assist users with everyday tasks—from tracking news and shopping to managing emails and scheduling meetings. Running on virtual machines in Meta’s servers, Muse can operate around the clock and even reflect on daily activities during downtime to improve its performance.

Addressing safety and security concerns, Zuckerberg emphasized that trust and alignment are the most critical capabilities for the next phase of AI development. Rather than treating safety as a constraint that slows down progress, Meta delayed the release of Muse by a few months to ensure robust privacy architectures. This includes utilizing confidential virtual machines equipped with encryption keys that only the user can access, ensuring that even Meta cannot read personal data.

2. The Next Computing Platform: AI Glasses and Wearables

Moving past the era of smartphones where users look down at tiny screens, Zuckerberg believes the future of computing lies in ubiquitous, wearable devices—specifically smart glasses.

Meta is expanding its lineup across multiple form factors:

  • Ray-Ban Meta Audio Glasses (Gen 3): Priced accessibly and designed to look virtually indistinguishable from regular non-AI glasses, these audio-only frames feature six hidden microphones, open-ear speakers, and upcoming FDA-approved medical-grade hearing enhancement features.
  • High-End VR/XR Headsets: Designed to merge the physical and digital worlds into the metaverse, these lightweight headsets offer high-resolution screens, acting simultaneously as a private cinema, multi-screen workstation, and gaming console.

3. Addressing Privacy and the “Pervert Glasses” Backlash

The mainstream adoption of camera-equipped smart glasses has brought intense scrutiny regarding privacy, with critics raising concerns over covert recording. Addressing the controversy, Zuckerberg noted that while privacy indicators and anti-tamper mechanisms (such as bricking the camera if the LED light is disabled) are built into the hardware, Meta acknowledges the need for more proactive communication.

He stressed that Meta’s long-term architecture for personal AI and wearables mirrors the privacy-first approach of WhatsApp—focusing heavily on secure, encrypted user environments rather than open social sharing.

4. Reinventing Meta for the AI Era

While Meta initially focused heavily on building the holographic metaverse, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence shifted the company’s trajectory. Zuckerberg noted that AI has proven to be an even bigger paradigm shift, capable of being delivered immediately in stylish, affordable form factors like glasses.

Ultimately, Zuckerberg envisions a future where personal AI agents seamlessly bridge the physical and digital worlds, relieving humans of tedious administrative burdens so they can focus more deeply on real-world connections.
