Let’s jump right in.

🚨 The Big Story: The “Fake QR Menu” Scam

Since the pandemic, almost every cafe and restaurant in Sri Lanka has adopted QR code menus. They are convenient, but scammers have found a highly low-tech way to hijack them: Stickers.

What is it? This is called “Quishing” (QR Phishing). Scammers print their own QR codes on small stickers and secretly paste them directly over the real QR code on a restaurant’s table. When you scan it to see the menu, it takes you to a fake website that looks exactly like a payment gateway, asking for your credit card details to “place your order.”

The Human-Friendly Fix: * The Scratch Test: Before you scan a QR code at a table or a parking meter, run your finger over it. Is it a sticker pasted on top of the original menu? If so, tell the staff immediately.

  • Check the Link: When you scan a code with your phone’s camera, it will show a preview of the website link before opening it. If you are at “Cafe Colombo” but the link says something weird like payment-update-xyz.com, do not click it.

🧘 The Local Pulse: Curing “Phantom Vibrations”

Have you ever been walking around the mall or sitting with family, felt your phone vibrate in your pocket, pulled it out… and there was no message?

You aren’t going crazy. It’s called Phantom Vibration Syndrome. Because our brains are so used to checking for notifications, our nervous system actually starts misinterpreting the friction of our clothes as a phone alert. It is a massive sign of digital burnout.

The Weekend Fix: Give your brain a break today. Try a mini “Digital Detox” this afternoon. Put your phone on a charger in a completely different room for just two hours while you watch a movie, read, or spend time with family. Out of sight, out of mind.

💡 The 1-Minute Tech Hack: The Toothpick Trick

Is your phone suddenly taking hours to charge, or does the charging cable keep falling out? You probably don’t need a new phone or a new charger. You just have pocket lint.

Try this today: Over months of sitting in pockets and bags, dust and fabric lint get packed tightly into the charging port at the bottom of your phone.

  • Turn your phone off.
  • Take a wooden or plastic toothpick (NEVER use a metal pin or paperclip, as it can ruin the electronics).
  • Very gently scrape inside the charging port. You will be amazed (and slightly disgusted) by the amount of gray fluff that falls out. Your charger will snap back in perfectly!
