With the commercial rollout of 5G and the introduction of satellite broadband, high-speed connectivity is becoming more accessible than ever. Here is a breakdown of the latest technological developments reshaping the country’s digital infrastructure.

1. Dialog’s 5G Commercial Launch and Air Fibre

After years of trials, next-generation mobile connectivity is officially a reality for Sri Lankan consumers.

• Commercial 5G Launch: On December 18, 2025, Dialog Axiata officially announced the commercial launch of its network, dubbed “Dialog 5G Ultra”.
• Massive Subscriber Base: The high-speed network is currently powered by over 220 live 5G sites, serving more than 1.5 million connected subscribers across the country.
• Advanced Spectrum and Investment: During the TRCSL spectrum auction, Dialog secured a 100 MHz block in the 3500 MHz band for wide-area coverage and a 200 MHz block in the 27 GHz band to enable gigabit-speed, high-capacity use cases. To support this growth, the company committed to investing USD 100 million over two years to expand its 5G infrastructure.
• Dialog Air Fibre: To bring 5G directly into homes and businesses, Dialog launched “Dialog Air Fibre” on May 24, 2026. This plug-and-play solution operates on the 5G network to provide ultra-fast Wi-Fi without the need for traditional physical cables. The Indoor Device Unit (IDU) is designed for local needs, including a built-in battery that provides up to six hours of continuous usage during power outages.

2. Starlink’s Satellite Broadband

For rural and off-grid areas where laying fiber cables or building 5G towers is logistically challenging, low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet has emerged as a powerful alternative.

• Official Licensing: Following a public consultation process, Elon Musk’s Starlink secured a Telecommunications Service Provider License from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) to provide satellite broadband services starting from August 12, 2024.
• Approved Tariff Plans: In January 2025, the TRCSL officially approved five distinct Starlink tariff packages for the Sri Lankan market. These packages are designed to cater to different user requirements, with prices ranging from Rs. 9,200 per month for standard connections up to Rs. 1.8 million per month for heavy-duty enterprise usage.

The combination of rapidly expanding 5G networks and Starlink’s satellite coverage means that fast, reliable internet is no longer limited strictly to major urban centers.
